Aveda, the company that creates plant-based hair, skin, and body products for beauty professionals and consumers, continues to lead the beauty industry in sustainability by taking greater measures to reduce waste in its packaging. After years of innovation in the polypropylene recycling arena, the company introduced a polypropylene dispensing tube closure with post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, and will make its debut in early 2018.

Currently, the tube utilizes a dispensing closure with 25 percent PCR content, yet Aveda is pursuing a closure with a higher percentage. “Determining the appropriate percentage of PCR content to integrate into a dispensing hinged closure, or any packaging component for that matter, requires time-intensive resources, molding trials and testing,” says Deb Darling, director of packing materials and innovations initiatives at Aveda. “Aveda took on this concentration goal 100 percent because the result aligns with the Aveda mission of caring for the world we live in. We aim to commercialize packaging innovations that reflect our high quality standards as we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility.”

This is one of many breakthroughs for Aveda in sustainable packaging as it was the first beauty company to use 100-percent, PCR polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and more than 85 percent of it’s skin care and hair styling PET bottles and jars contain 100-percent PCR materials. Aveda has also made a great impact on the recycling industry through its “Recycle Caps with Aveda” program that they started in 2008. It was the first ever plastic caps recycling program in the United States.

“My colleagues and I will continue to raise the bar when it comes to innovative, sustainable packaging solutions. It’s a privilege to work side by side with a team so dedicated to this effort. We are sincere in our practice and truly believe that when we work hand in hand with our suppliers, we can create innovative, environmentally-responsible packaging” Darling adds. Aveda has proudly committed almost 10 years of work in the polypropylene recycling space and will continue to do so for many years to come.
