Walmart recently announced that it is cutting 7,000 jobs—particularly, back office positions. Company officials have reported that the cuts will amount to about two to three employees per store.

Employees relieved of their back-office duties are expected to have opportunities to occupy other positions within the company, especially on the sales floor. The company has been making a greater push in its customer service efforts recently to compete effectively with other major retailers. It is also installing automated systems to support its bookeeping operations.

CNBC reported company spokesperson, Kory Lundberg, explaining that the superstore’s motivations behind the job cuts were essentially customer service and efficiency.

The story was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
