In its 6th year, Small Business Saturday—which follows Thanksgiving every year, and kicks off national holiday shopping days, deals and the shopping season—will take place Nov. 28. The annual event was created by American Express in 2010 to support small businesses, which create jobs and boost the economy.
Small Business Saturday saw 88 million people “shop small” and spend $14 billion at small businesses throughout the event in 2014, according to Small Business Saturday insights.
The event itself has driven high visibility and appreciation for the unique role that small businesses play in local communities. Yearly, American Express has supported participating small businesses with free marketing materials, including event guides, posters, social and digital materials and Shop Small merchandise. Small businesses may, again, take advantage of the free marketing materials for the 2015 event by applying online by Nov. 16.
Small businesses that are interested in rousing the participation of other local small businesses may sign up as a Neighborhood Champion. In the past, Neighborhood Champions have organized events and promotions to rally the support of local small businesses. Supporting materials are also available, including a Small Business Saturday Event Kit and Shop Small merchandise. Interested parties must sign up by Nov. 9.
In 2014, Neighborhood Champion events included:
- A regional “shopping tour” highlighting different shopping districts in Portland, Oregon
- A fashion show featuring merchandise from local businesses in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania
- A block party with giveaways and live music in Starke, Florida
- A tree-lighting ceremony and chili cook-off in Idaho Falls, Idaho
- A holiday festival with horse-drawn carriage rides and visits from Santa in McKinney, Texas
